The (more than) half-way mark: five months in Guatemala

Today marks my sixth month living in Guatemala, and I'm loving it more and more each day. I'm forever grateful to be doing what I love and surrounded by amazing people. Work is going great, and my students continue to capture my heart (teaching stories over  here  and part 3 coming soon). But life here is not all work, and there's some play! Here's a bit of a roundup of life lately. :) One Saturday, we had heard of an event in the city called  "Una Noche en la Calle de los Museos"  (A night in the Museum Street) . Starting at 6pm they closed off the street where there are several museums, and there were different stations and events along the streets. There were art stations, activities for kids, live music (the marimba one was so nice to listen to!), and many more things going on. All the museums were also free to enter for the night. Semana Santa in Antigua

Being a predominantly Catholic country, Guatemala (as does most of Latin America) celebrates Semana Santa or Holy Week . Schools have the week off, and I was lucky enough to have my mama com visit. :) We headed to the popular (but not overrated) cities, and enjoyed exploring and eating the week away. First stop: Antigua . Parque Cenral My mama arrived late on Saturday evening, so we spent the night near the airpot, and early Sunday morning took a shuttle to Antigua. After freshening up a bit, we headed out to explore. It was Palm Sunday, so we first heard mass at a church called San Pedro, then with that out of the way, set out to explore the city. San Pedro Apostol It was fun walking around the city seeing the people celebrating Domingo de Ramos or Palm Sunday . The streets were packed with people, mostly locals who had come from all over. There were also countless vendors selling palms outside the churches, and the sight outside La Merced was an especially pretty one. ...
