Day 90: Museum Hopping in Manhattan

Spent the whole day today visiting museums in Manhattan. First up was the Museum of Modern Art (also my favorite among the three).

The 5th and 4th floor were the paintings gallery. They had a lot of classics, including one of my favorite paintings: Van Gogh's Starry Night.

Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans

They had a whole room full of Monet's Water Lilies.

They had so many great collections, it was really wonderful to get to see so much good art.

In the lobby was the sculpture garden.

On the way to the Met I saw this cute kid playing violin in the street. His sign said he's following the footsteps of his idol, Joshua Bell.

Next up, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, more commonly known as the Met. The museum is huge (it's the largest art museum in the U.S. and one of the ten largest in the world); I knew I wouldn't be able to see everything, so I decided to just go to the sections that interested me.

So I went to the European paintings...

...And the modern and contemporary art galleries.

Before I left I visited the Rooftop Garden and enjoyed a glass of sangria while checking out the Manhattan skyline.

The last museum was the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum.

Loved the building (designed by Frank Lloyd Wright) - super cool design which made for an interesting set up for the galleries and collections.

No pictures allowed so instead I'll talk about the Guggenheim app which was cool. (The MoMA had a similar app). The app had information about the building and the collections, a map, and also worked as an audio guide.

You could explore the app on your own, or input the code number seen on the cards beside the painting to find the audio guide on the app.  Below is the commentary of one of the paintings...

...and they also have transcripts of the audio commentaries. It was so useful and easy to use, and the museum also had free wifi so you could download the app on the spot.

All the museums closed by 5:45, so I headed back to the apartment and Tita Cynthia took me out for dinner. We ate at Joe's Pizza, which was really good. A simple menu with just three flavors - cheese, pepporoni, and Sicilian; good old fashioned New York pizza.

We still had some time to spare before our play so we walked around the area to Washington Square Park.

They had a dog park too! So cute

Such a beautiful park

Then we headed to the Public Theater to watch Here Lies Love, a musical about Imelda Marcos.

Most the whole play is sung, and features rock music, and moving stages. It was an interestingly different experience, and the musical numbers were really good. The audience stands the whole show (about 90 minutes), and you move along with the stages, even dancing with the actors at several points.

We ended the night with dessert at ChikaLicious, and tried some yummy brown sugar pancake balls.
